Campus

The university’s extensive network collectively hosting 17,000 faculty and staff, educating over 100,000 students, and engaging a robust community of half a million alumni. The Hazleton Campus in northeastern Pennsylvania offers scenic views of the Conyngham Valley. The Lehigh Valley campus, located in charming Center Valley, provides a world-class education in a small, intimate setting. Additionally, the York campus in south-central Pennsylvania meets the diverse needs of local and international students, contributing uniquely to the university’s dynamic and inclusive educational environment.
SIU offers a number of modern amenities for the benefit of its students. These include the Student Services Building, the Student Center, Morris Library, the Student Recreation Center, and the Student Health Center.
The Student Services Building contains most of the university’s student-related offices. Spread across four floors, students have easy access to help and consultation from advisors at the Undergraduate Admissions Office, Graduate School, Financial Aid Office, University Housing, Career Development Center, and numerous other offices.
Southern Illinois University has a total undergraduate enrollment of 8,000 (fall 2022), and the campus size is 1,136 acres.

City Conditions

Edwardsville is in Madison County and is one of the best places to live in Illinois. Living in Edwardsville offers residents a sparse suburban feel and most residents own their homes. Many young professionals live in Edwardsville and residents tend to lean conservative.
Edwardsville is usually cloudy all year round. The summers there are warm and muggy, while the winters are frigid and snowy. Over the year, the temperature typically varies from 24°F to 88°F and is rarely below 8°F or above 95°F.

About Bachelor of Science in Communication

At SIUE, the Mass communications program aims at preparing students to make a successful career in one of the fastest-growing and dynamic fields: Mass media. The Department of Mass Communications at SIUE is accredited by the highly-selective Accrediting Council on Education in Journalism and Mass Communication (ACEJMC). This means, that due to small class sizes our students get one-on-one attention from their instructors and their curriculum keeps up with changes in the media industry. SIUE students have access to state-of-the-art facilities and faculty members who dedicate themselves to serving the professional and intellectual needs of the students. The Department of Mass Communications offers four sequences: Print/Electronic journalism, TV-radio production, Advertising, and Corporate communications.

Career Opportunities

Graduates of the Department of Mass Communications choose various career paths. Their graduates have become reporters, editors and photojournalists for newspapers, magazines, and online publications. Others work in radio and television, for advertising agencies, and in marketing and communications positions at major corporations and nonprofits; many become the social media experts in their positions. Some graduates take an entrepreneurial approach and create careers as independent videographers, event planners, graphic designers, web developers, and freelance communications specialists.
